Private Client - Owner of Historic Gloucestershire Estate and Business Owner

Private client Gloucestershire estate archival work

The client required a consultant archivist to support both immediate and long-term projects. We worked with the client to establish project priorities and a practical plan of action. Each strand of work was managed professionally and efficiently while keeping the client involved in key decisions. The work included:

  • Investigating the location of surviving estate archives that had been dispersed across several repositories.
  • Assessing all identified archives relating to the estate, including one major collection, and producing reports on their content and historic value.
  • Arranging the digitisation of a major collection, including commissioning a digitisation company and managing communication with the repository.
  • Writing a book on the history of the estate, including research, image selection, editing, and design.
  • Assessing, cataloguing, and repackaging the estate and family archives, including fragile and mixed-format material.
  • Listing the client’s private book collection, creating a bespoke arrangement, and reshelving the volumes to the new arrangement.
  • Researching and writing a second book focused on the estate’s restoration.
  • Cataloguing and repackaging over 5 decades of business records.

The client had a range of projects over several years that required curatorial advice and heritage expertise. The work combined collections care, curatorial planning, public engagement and outreach, and the long-term development of the trust’s archive and art collections, culminating in a new arrangement for their permanent gallery. The work balanced preservation needs with access, interpretation and ongoing programme delivery.

Key projects and responsibilities included:

  • Care, conservation, and curatorial management of the Bingham Library Trust collection, including digitisation and cataloguing.
  • Advising on acquisitions and disposals.
  • Developing and maintaining collection care policies.
  • Expanding and managing the Bingham Art Collection, including the design and delivery of bespoke professional standard art storage.
  • Creating a research facility using MODES software.
  • Increasing awareness of the Bingham Trust archives held at Gloucestershire Archives and developing the archive collection.
  • Designing and delivering an annual themed exhibition using the trust’s art and archive collections.
  • Promoting and developing the Bingham Gallery, Art Collection, and Archive.
  • Delivering presentations, workshops, lectures, tours, and outreach events.
  • Promoting understanding of Daniel George Bingham and his legacy.
